indoglish

Because I use a lot of Indo on this mostly English site, here's some lingo for the uninitiated:

abang=big brother
ade/adek=younger sibling (gender neutral)
bete/bt=a negative emotion, usually irritation or a bad mood
cewe/ce=slang for girls
cowo/co=slang for boys
ja'im (jaga imej/image)=guarding your social image
kakak (pronounced kaka')=older sibling (gender neutral, or female, depending)
--kak (ka')=honorific for older siblings or 'sempai'
kuliah/kul=college
gwe (sometimes gw, gue)=slang for I or me
SD=elementary school
SK (sometimes es-ka; setia kawan): solidarity, loyalty (among friends)
skul=school
SMA=high school
SMP=middle school
TK=kindergarten
wa=slang for I, me (same as 'gwe')

what are all those 2s? this is shorthand for a 'kata ulang' or repeated word. ngakak2 is read ngakak-ngakak= laughing very hard

any words that need to be added?

have a beef

I'm currently involved in an AI discussion regarding our stupider national pastime: tawuran. Tawuran is the street-fighting that occurs between schools and sometimes colleges in Indonesia, usually in Jakarta.

Usually it's sparked by some minor incident: say a student from school A takes the lunchmoney of a student from school B. School B students feel wronged, and gather a posse to go "get revenge", afterwards, school A students do likewise, and so on, until it ends up as a massive in-the-street brawl, occasionally with fatalities.

Most of the time, the people taking personal offense at whatever minor incident has occured don't have anything to do with it; weren't there, aren't freinds of the victim, don't really know anyone who was involved beyond the matter of their schools of origin.

What brings this up is AI-ers bragging about their 'fighting days'. Our equivalent to "I'm so gangsta, yo!" and just as pathetic.

Wanna feel strong? Do a martial art. (I did and Sempai R would have ripped me a new one had I ever been caught in the street hurling bricks at people.) Do a damn sport. Do something, anything, worthwhile But the people who throw themselves into this idiocy aren't the sort of folks who understand dicipline, or working at a skill. They want to go out, toss some rocks around and strut.

Sure, it may sound like exageration, but I swear to you, it's not.

The whole fake 'I'm defending my school' is about the stupidest thing I've ever heard--besides these idiots who are actually impressed by it. The way the Jakarta school system works, you can end up in the same college with a former 'enemy', at which point the 'war' is moot--and completely so--so why even start it?

What, my freinds, is the point of the exercise? And why is hooliganisme something to be proud of?

There are people in this world who have wibawa--a sort of weight of charachter, authority, standing, a kind of commanding of respect. I don't see some moron with little else to brag about than the ability to throw bricks around as one of those people.

I think it's pathetic that so many folks do.

the layout

Wanderlust v2. is a stargate layout.

The idea of the Stargate has always been one I liked: step through and wind up far, far away. It's Star Wars meets CS. Lewis's wardrobe.

Welcome to wanderlust--v2. out there
