indoglish

Because I use a lot of Indo on this mostly English site, here's some lingo for the uninitiated:

abang=big brother
ade/adek=younger sibling (gender neutral)
bete/bt=a negative emotion, usually irritation or a bad mood
cewe/ce=slang for girls
cowo/co=slang for boys
ja'im (jaga imej/image)=guarding your social image
kakak (pronounced kaka')=older sibling (gender neutral, or female, depending)
--kak (ka')=honorific for older siblings or 'sempai'
kuliah/kul=college
gwe (sometimes gw, gue)=slang for I or me
SD=elementary school
SK (sometimes es-ka; setia kawan): solidarity, loyalty (among friends)
skul=school
SMA=high school
SMP=middle school
TK=kindergarten
wa=slang for I, me (same as 'gwe')

what are all those 2s? this is shorthand for a 'kata ulang' or repeated word. ngakak2 is read ngakak-ngakak= laughing very hard

any words that need to be added?

[original][-9r] Pieces of Dark [1a/7][PG13]

I quit with the editing. This thing doesn't actually suck . . . it would take a whole re-write and overhaul to drag it up to the level of suck. I believe the best description of this dissaster is "bleaghhh agh agh".

But I believe thats excused by its being a NaNo story.

So with minor edits and spell check only, part one.

ETA: Added a chapter index, because it turns out there's a function for I can use for that.

( I. edge of the sky {part a})

Copy pasted from MSword. I hope the format keeps.

[original][-9r] Pieces of Dark [1b/7][PG13]

That first part actually posted okay. Hello non-dissapeared word document formatting!

I broke this into two parts because there seems to be a word-per-post limit. Here's the second half.

ETA: And here's the chapter index.

(I. edge of the sky {part b})

I have to hunt loopholes before I post the next sections. It may be crap, but it may as well be crap with a continuum. At least of sorts.

I hate you ficpress.

Ficpress has dropped all the multiple spaces that I had been using for page breaks.

And now won't let me upload a new document with marked breaks.

Those bastards.

On the other hand, someone there 'fav'ed me and my story. And I didn't even have to promise sexual favors to leave them glowing reviews in return.

=)

I'm always the last to know about everything.

Nevertheless, I link you DM of the Rings, a webcomic that pokes fun at Dungeons and Dragons and Lord of the Rings, by inserting D&D players' personalities into the movie charachters.

Me? I'm in favor of anything that pokes fun at D&D players. For serious.

at least I whine like the pros

If you thought part one of the Nano fic was bad, it just gets worse in part two and if I remember correctly I start losing all sense of continuity in part three. By part four, I'm referring to past events that I never wrote or even mentioned, and by part five I'm referring to past events that not only come out of the blue, but flat-out contradict those previously mentioned events.

Ah, Nano. It's sort of funny how you can track the slow decline of the author's mental state through the text.

Of course, it doesnt help none that I hang later events on both sets of conradicting events. (Did I say 'both'? Theres probably more than two sets . . . .)

So, chapter two needs actual editing--Okay, chapter one needed actual editing. Haha. Very funny--because of a painful rise in painful dialogue, among other things. Actually, the whole story suffers from an over-abundance of dialogue, period, because thats what I used to drag scenes out to fill my daily quotas.

Really, the story's a lot better if you just skim it.

[original][-9r] Pieces of Dark [2a/7][PG13]

Part two, now with edits and spellcheck. And pagebreaks. Also available on ficpress, for those that hate reading on my blog's layout. Or hey, control and +, if it's just a matter of the text being too small.

And seriously? I have no idea what is up with my chapter titles. This one doesn't even make sense for the chapter.

ETA: Earlier parts can be found at the chapter index.

(II. old space, new space {part a})

I thought editing chapter by chapter would help break things up, and it does, but now and then I get to a small point, and remember, "Oop. I wanted to delete the mention of that in chapter one." Oh well. S'how it goes.

but really I just want attention

For the last year and change, I've enjoyed writing my own worlds and characters more than fanfic. The fanfic was more like a phase anyway, and before it I just blatantly plagerized books I liked. (For some reason never TV shows or comics, though when I was around 12, I did spend a week trying to do a knock-off strip of Calvin and Hobbes .)

I wrote crappy rip offs of everything from Brian Jacquez's Redwall books, to those porny prehistoric 'historical fictions' which I may have been a shade too young to read. (Especially given how I never realised how porntacular those books were, even while ladygoddess the wonderful of the something-or-other tribe is sexed up yet again in a caveman ritual of crop growing or whatever.--10-year-old-Bart: "Wow, cavemen had weird religions." *goes to play soccer*)

Not that cluelessness stopped me from madly plagerizing, and if I think about it, it's a very lucky thing that there was no internet available to me back then, because boy would it have suffered my fleeting literary fancies.

Which gets me back to the intended point of this post: That there's very few places to post/pimp original fiction. There's ficpress--that won't accept NC17 fiction--and a couple of LJ comms that I use when my fics happen to fall--however loosely--under their specific interests, but theres no live, active, constant community to post non-fanfic to.

Which, of course, leaves only ficpress, and how am I going to achieve world domination through porn if I can't post the smut?

still with the edits

Chapter 3 is 27 pages long. Almost twice as long as any of the preceeding chapters. -____-;;

Also, it's edging into mid-Nano, and it shows, because at times it's semi-incoherent. There's whole scenes that are almost completely useless, except that they're referred to later on. With a little work, I suppose I could turf close to 5-6 pages. Maybe more.

Work. Hah!

tetris

The radio guys are boggling over a story from China, where a truck crashed while carrying eight times the number of passangers the truck was made to carry.

Radio guy: How the heck do you fit that many people into a quad-cab?

Well, radio guy, 'round some parts, it's something of an art form.

100th verse, same as the first

I totally meant to go over to the 2D labs and get some work done, but it was, uh . . . raining. Yeah.

I did link the fic chapters from the contents link, over on the left, under where it says 'tabulas links'. Just so they're findable.

I work so hard, I know. I'm like a fucking paragon of effort.

one might think I'd learn from this

So around two this afternoon I finally overcame my crisis of enthusiasm and showered, then headed over to the city to work on my project.

Only to find the labs aren't open on Sundays until next week, and not open late (1:30 am) until around week four or five. I wasn't even aware they staggered open lab times like that. It kinda sucks.

The project isn't actually due until Thursday, so I have some time, but Wednesday morning--the day off I usually rely on to finish work due later in the week--I have frikkin' dental surgery. (That root canal back in the summer never took, so they're gonna go in through the side and fucking cut through bone. At least, thats what it looks like in the cartoony pamphlet.)

The pamphlet also says to go straight home after and do nothing strenous for the rest of the day. I'm guessing a trek to the city and up the hill to the 2D labs falls under that, but I may have no choice.

And you know, if I had just gone to the labs yesterday, downpour nonwithstanding . . . .

I'd say "lesson learned", but I've said that before, and I somehow doubt I'm fooling anyone anymore.

Used to be I could at least snow myself.

red pen

I'm not very good at editing. I usually just end up fixing sentances and deleting here and there, and while I can think up much better ways for scenes to go, I can't ever figure out how to mesh the better scene with whats already written.

Chapter three is where my NaNo fic starts to get really f-ed up. I bet theres a direct corellation between the fic's descent into gibberish and Mom's visit.

Know how you can tell that I'm horrible, ungrateful offspring? Because while I did not type that and cackle, I typed it nontheless. Mom, if you have somehow acquired this url and are reading this, John made me write it. I'd never say such a thing, even in text, but he was going to beat me up.

You know he's mean like that.

[original][-9r] My Sister Loves the Moonlight [1/1][PG]

Sidestory. Because I suck at editing, I did something entirely, uh . .  else. Yeah.

ETA: Also up on ficpress, but it's easier to edit tabulas posts than it is ficpress stories, so this version has been tweaked and poked at, and is probably a little tidier.

(My Sister Loves the Moonlight {oneshot})

The 'content' function I use as a chapter index is only two pages deep (contents title page, and the page itself) so chapters are listed under story titles, instead of each story having its own index.

It makes more sense looking at it than when I try to explain it. I swear.

Me. Wasting today.

School? Work? Whatever. Screw that shit.

Today I stayed home to sulk, and in order to sulk properly did absolutely nothing I was supposed to and nothing worthwhile either, although I did do some dishes. But only because I was clean out of coffee cups.

And no, I don't want to talk about it.

I did write this, though. And I can talk about it, even. Sorta.

Sidestory to Pieces of Dark , which can be found through the chapter index.

(Strange Lands {oneshot})

Also on ficpress, but as always the blog version is the one that gets the compulsive editing and tidying, because editing stories on fp is a pain.

Mengejar Matahari

Mengejar Matahari has been described to me as "the guy's AADC", but AADC was really a whole lot better, and was only bad for the one scene. (Where the house blows up, and the main couple run away from it in a scene thats almost tokusatsu. I mean, WTF, this was a girly high school romance.)

MM is about four boys who grow up together in a housing complex, then stuff happens and more stuff and at the end Bad Stuff happens and they have to go their seperate ways.

(Fucking god, do some work, Bart)

Mengejar Matahari could have been really good, as the talent is all there, from actors to the camera work, but the plot is lame and forced, events don't feel like they happen naturally, and many of the 'important' parts of the dialogue are awkward.

Education. The 'whitener'.

My responses aren't showing up some sites. I'm not sure why this is, but I took my rant here instead.

Megatrouble, where I wandered from Hathor has an essay about race and gender in Lost, the only show I regularly tune into, unless I fall asleep on the couch before it starts.

The essay covers a lot of things that have been bothering me, like the increasing sidelining of non-white charachters, the fact that only one girl is 'worthy' to hang with the main group and influence the plot, and the exodus of black charachters.

But it also contains the line:

Sun took a step toward 'whiteness' when we learned that she could speak English.

Hello and what?

A lot of Asian countries have compulsory english classes all the way through school, and often on into college. And I would be very surprised if Sun, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, hadn't gone to very good schools which would almost certainly have taught English.

In fact, I was somewhat surprised that she had to learn it from her friend instead of already having some ability. (Though admittedly they never really show what her level of fluency was when she started taking lessons from him though it seems to be pretty low.)

Is Sayid 'whiter' for being bilingual? Is Eko 'whiter' for being an english speaker? What is this idea that an Asian can't speak english--as many, many of us do, fyi--without compromising their 'Asianness'?

Should a charachter be denied an ability that it makes sense for him/her to have to satisfy an audience's sense of enthinicity? Isn't 'ethnisizing' as bad as 'whitening'?

But let me say it in a 'less white way': We speaky english gud sometime.

I don't know if I've linked this before, but I think I didn't mention that this is one the clips I watch when I spend three hours and come out of the labs with three freaking seconds of animation.

After I finish contemplating whether or not throwing myself out of the animation lab window would end the pain, or just add more, different pain, clips like this remind me that animation is cool.

Painful as fucking sin, but cool.

in the lost city

I love SGA fandom because not only do they sincerely believe stories like this are a good idea;

I want to do a parent trap fic. Where long lost twins Zelenka and Lorne try to get John and Rodney back together by switching places and then singing show tunes.

they actually write them.

My favorite is the one where John and Rodney get turned into dolphins. (I wish I had the link.) But also the one where Halling runs for president (by eleveninches) and then theres one where they accidentally sell John into slavery because Rodney thinks they're talking about a laptop (link also lost).

And while I'm on the subject of things made of crack; yesterday I totally had a phone conversation with my mother re. hot guys.

(Clearly, there is not enough alcohol in the world . . . .)

Sometimes I really think Mom needs some chick friends, but also, I feel vaguely traumatized by the fact that she is now going to watch all the shows I mentioned for the purpose of getting back to me with her opinion re. my taste in dudes.

wzuh?

Lost may just have officially become too fucked up, even for me.

Or possibly, its just that its stumbled onto one of my more hated weird-story plot devices/topics: destined paths, and reincarnated charachters.

If we discover anyone is someone's reincarnated lover from 10BCE or something, I'm gonna quite watching. I swear to god.

my brain is a crossdresser

The gender genie thinks most of my blog entries (except the one on gender and race in lost) are male written, but that my fiction is female.

Thats real interesting, wot?

*is now trying stories on my HD that are in different styles*

ETA: Oddly, it consistently pegs the backwork of my stories/worlds as a male's, even though it pegs the stories themselves as female authored.

[original][blackbirds] A Taste Like Ashes [1/??][PG13]

Postin' like a mad thing tonight. A clear sign I have a lot of homework. ^__^

This one has been up on a certain forum for a while, but no one gave a crap. Yeah, you know who you are, and I want you to know I hate you all. You and all your talk of CnCs. Liars.

Working title. I'm a little fond of it, but as you may have noticed, my titles tend to the innane and lamely over-dramatic. My word file, btw, is simply labeled 'trek'. Because it involves walking. Trekking, if you will.

Also, as per my usual attention whoring, up at ficpress.

(A Taste Like Ashes {part 1})

Tabulas's advanced editor that I use to post stories (so as not to lose formatting) has line spacing issues like woah. Or maybe it's me, having issues with anything that warrants the label "advanced".

katsu > bart

So at lunchtime I headed over to the Hawaiian barbaque place (where you can get Hawaiian style Texas barbaque, no joke) and got chicken katsu, which is sort of a breaded fried chicken thing, and 'katsu' doesn't sound even remotely Hawaiian. But the shop has a sign saying 'Mahalo' and who am I to argue?

My friend V introduced me to the joy that is the Hawaiian bbq place, but it seems that chicken katsu is now right up there with fast food burgers as a food I Cannot Eat.

Since moving to California, it seems my body has completely lost any taste/patience for fats-even if the food itself isn't really that greasy--and lets me know via that ucky feeling you get when theres too much 'butter' on theatre popcorn. Ugh.

Its too bad, because the hawaiian bbq place not only = yum, but also = close to campus building I spend an ungodly amount of time at.

Guess its back to coffee and sandwiches.

Sadface!

Where is my spring, you?!

I think I'm coming down with something. I'm not sure yet, but that would really make my month, wot.

Yesterday was, like, freezingly cold, and I remember NY when the wind was so strong you couldn't breathe crossing the parking lot. It just whipped the air away. My brother and I had to dash from car to car to hunker behind them and breathe a minute before dashing to the next one.

Yesterday was nothing like that. It was maybe a NY Nippy, or NY Crisp.

North California has made me soft. And it's only been a couple years. Next year this time I might be all, "WHY IS THIS CHOCOLATE BAR NOT ORGANIC!?!"

"AND WHERE IS MY PONY?!"

needs more Reno

My digital photography class bores me to fucking tears. Maybe things will pick up as the semester continues, but what we're talking about right now I've already been over in Photo&Darkroom back in JC, and remember it all clearly thanks to continued fiddling with my dad's fancy camera that I stole from him. (Shh!)

And I slept through most of P&D, so you can imagine how exciting digital is for me. Seriously, I do not need to spend three classes discussing what the fstop is.

It doesn't help that theres this older lady, who keeps asking fucking inane questions that she seems to think benefit the rest of us--who got it a class and a half ago, kthnx. Or maybe she really doesn't understand. I don't know. I just wish the instructor would stop encouraging her by telling her that they are "good questions". They are not. They are incredibly fucking obvious questions, and I am bored to fucking tears, and please stop making up dumb questions about the fstop, there are other functions to be perplexed about.

I am coping by drawing FF7 porn, which now that I look at it, is very badly drawn, but it is all that keeps me going for those three hours of fstop class digital photo.

And if you think I'm being the sulky, emo kid up the back, you'd be wrong. I am fully partipatory in this class. I am following the material. I answer questions and make witty commentary, and keep up with the repartee, and know what the latest confusion re. the fstop is all about. (Nothing. Its about Nothing. It's always about Nothing.) While drawing porn, which shows how much attention this class is requiring.

I AM SO BORED I COULD DIE.

My funny avatars folder--in which I save funny avatars, natch. And, actually, any avatar that catches my eye. I'm not organised--is filling up with Stargate: Atlantis avas.

I don't know why this is. They're not even funny, except in a reading-too-much-into-Rodney's-expression sort of way.

I used to be a jock. I just want you all to know that. I don't know when this downward slide into internet and nerd show addiction started, but when I was in school, I was totally a jock.

In a couple of my schools, I was even one of the cool kids.

And now I make jokes involving internet acronyms, cartoon-based porn, and the cast of Star Wars, god save me.

I need to do laundry. My last pair of 'clean' jeans smell like a barn. And I'm from upstate NY, I know what a barn smells like.

At least my manly slobbery is still intact.
