indoglish

Because I use a lot of Indo on this mostly English site, here's some lingo for the uninitiated:

abang=big brother
ade/adek=younger sibling (gender neutral)
bete/bt=a negative emotion, usually irritation or a bad mood
cewe/ce=slang for girls
cowo/co=slang for boys
ja'im (jaga imej/image)=guarding your social image
kakak (pronounced kaka')=older sibling (gender neutral, or female, depending)
--kak (ka')=honorific for older siblings or 'sempai'
kuliah/kul=college
gwe (sometimes gw, gue)=slang for I or me
SD=elementary school
SK (sometimes es-ka; setia kawan): solidarity, loyalty (among friends)
skul=school
SMA=high school
SMP=middle school
TK=kindergarten
wa=slang for I, me (same as 'gwe')

what are all those 2s? this is shorthand for a 'kata ulang' or repeated word. ngakak2 is read ngakak-ngakak= laughing very hard

any words that need to be added?

I'll draw you some pictures if you'll trade for more time.

I have less than two weeks to hand draw ten seconds of animation, and I just wasted three days playing on the internet.

Go team me.

I also rented videos that are now four bucks worth of late and I still haven't watched them. Because I've been playing on the internet.

I even put off my procrastination, and say what you want, that takes a whole 'nother level of lazy. It takes a certain dedication to lazy to stack procrastination three or four layers deep. (You may only be counting two, but theres other stuff I'm doing involving making coffee and playing with my camera that I'm not even getting into.)

On the other hand, her card is a photo of her naked in a tree.

Today, after a drawing workshop, the model asked if she could take a picture of the drawing I had done, and whether I minded if she put it on her professional site as an example of art done off of her modeling.

O__o

I feel so professionally validated.

(I have my drawing pad on my floor, open to that picture. It's not even that good, but I don't even care.)

story ramblage--animation

This is probably the universe that I'll use for the next NaNo.

This is just playing, and its not on an outline or anything, but opinions are still welcome.

(Just be warned, it probably doesn't make any sense.)

I hate when things are over.

I only have another year and a bit left of school until I graduate. I feel nostalgic already. And kind of blue.

For all my whining, I don't really want to go home. Not for real. Not for ever. Not if it means year after year of the same thing. Being a student is awesome because you get to exist in that dreamland of "when I grow up" and actually be moving toward whatever dream it is you have.

I don't know that I actually want to get there.

I think that "when I grow up" is a far more exciting place to be than to be actually grown up.

I'm homesick as hell, and have been since I was sixteen, but I don't want to be tied down, either. I want things to be new, and different and changing all the time.

I don't want this to end.

I hate when things are over.

Okay, you lot win.

So, after telling everyone I like the heat, and going "YAY SUMMER!" and extolling the virtues of brain-baking temperatures, I am ready to cede the point.

It's too freaking hot out.

Funny story about that, actually.

(Landlord: After this excitement, I guess no one needs coffee, LOL)

Pants: always keep them handy.

at least there is food in the fridge

So I seriously miscalculated my . . . uh . . . calculations. And boy howdy was I surprised when the atm print-out told me how close I was to broke-ass.

Its not that much of a big deal, really. I should be okay by the middle of next week at the latest. It just makes me kind of nervous to be that thin, financially speaking.

But whatever. Here, look at some pics.

(These are from my sketchbook.)

Murphy's law: 12; Bart: 0

So today I meant to get in early to see my instructor, even though I had very little new footage to show him. I just wanted it to look like I was trying really hard, because I was late for class all semester, in the likely event my project gains sentience and eats me, am kind of horrifically behind, want teachers to think I r0x0rs.

Then I thought, 'if he sees what I have so far, he'll know I suck', and then do the funny brow thing and go, "I'm just a little concerned about" and list a bazillion things like in the last class when he went, I think you're good to go, except this pose isn't working, and you might want to change these drawings and this timing here and maybe REDO ALL THE KEYS FOR THIS ENTIRE CHARACTER.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST KILL ME NOW, IT WOULD BE FAR MORE TIME-EFFECTIVE THAN TRYING TO DRIVE ME TO SUICIDE jhsfaofhasjndfy wryaiuydfsd

Anyway, it was pointless to worry about it because when I got to the lab, and taped the new frames:

--I realised I had forgotten my flashdrive in my other pants. (f'real!)
--The computer refused to a)recognise my MP3 player as a device (IT'S PLUG AND PLAY, DAMMIT!! GRAH!) b)share files with the other computers, which might have recognised the drive c)let me email the file to myself. (CONNECTION RESET WTF?!)

So I could not, in fact, bring my files down to Mount Doom his office.

And of course everyone had to use all the recording stations I was using. I tried to make them uncomfortable by hovering and foot tapping but they just doggedly continued. Even the ones that got kind of twitchy. Tomorrow I'm going to try wincing sympathetically and going, "Is that on fives?" (#of animation frames each picture is used for. Usually on ones or twos, after that it gets a little choppy.)

And then, coming home, I got all the way to Berkeley before realizing I had forgotten to give back the lab equipment and the techs still had my ID ($20 if lost, and probably around 30-40 for the peg bar.) and so I went back to the city.

And now I have to go buy pie for class, because after torturing the instructor about pie qualifying for the 'healthy food only' potluck ("BUT IT HAS FRUIT FILLING!!") until he gave up, I can hardly turn up pie-less.

E: BY THAT CRITERIA, I'M BRINGING POP TARTS!

D: I had that class last semester. I brought Triscuit.
Me: I should bring, like, animal crackers. It only has to be enough for six people . . . . Theres more than six in there right?

However, bringing animal crackers would render obsolete all the pie/pi jokes I've been working on all day.

. . . I need sleep.

Is there a fan in the audience?

So, I have a giant project due on Thursday, but I'm reading Andromeda fanfiction instead.

Honestly, I never watched the show, because I cannot stand the Sorbo, but I just file his goofy no-talent mug away under 'visual denied' and pretend that its all original sci-fi.

So. I have a question for anyone that watched the show. Or maybe its a couple of questions:

Why could they remove the magog that infested Tyr, but not the ones in Harper? And why can't they just be surgically removed? Is it something about the magog, or just that theres no surgeon around?

Loan me some motivation for this one day to go.

I got my project in on time, and it was great and my class audience laughed at all the right places, even for the vhs assigment I forgot to show and played at the very end of presentation day.

Bored and dead out of pita chips, and the amount of lol was still pretty decent.

Of course, now that the big projects are out of the way, my will to study for my liberal arts class and do the bitty quizes that are due tomorrow is close to nil.

I can't believe I have to write a sonnet. BLAAAAAAAAAH!

theres no iambic in my pentameter

Last night I was so excited about being able to sleep in this morning that I didn't actually get to sleep until sometime past three AM. While I was bouncing around with the thrill of liberty, I decided that my mission for this summer was to watch all of the new Battlestar Galactica, and as the video place finally has the first disc back in (someone had been refusing to return it) I got right on that.

I wasn't going to watch it, ever ever ever out of protest for them turning Starbuck into a girl, but then my flist was all on it, and people on Hathor talked about girl!Starbuck being an okay charachter--despite the producers feeling the need to justify her attitude by pointing out all the ways in which she's damaged, while the guys can just have attitude--and I thought. 'Kay. If its dark and plotty and has neat visuals, I'll give it a shot.

Turns out, I'm so far liking girl!Starbuck, even though I would have preferred a different actor. No one in particular, I mean. I don't have a suggestion or anything. I just don't like her. (I am also amused by how Boomer, once a Black man, is now an Asian girl.)

Not to beat a dead horse any more than its been, but the characher switcharoo still bugs me, despite my liking the new cast when not considered in relation to the old. I just don't really see why they eliminated the existing female charachters, then gender-turned the guy chas. I'm just not following the logic that leads there. Why not just make new charachters? Why not have a Starbuck and a Kara Thrace? (And to those who say 'but this allows a whole different relationship between Apollo and Starbuck' . . . please. Why let a little gender get in the way of your UST? Also, I liked me some gay overtones, kay?)

In short: I'm in full time wasting mode. Which looks a lot like procrastination mode, but without the suppressed panic.

And now here is the point of this post, my terrible, terrible sonnet. Let me explain first that it had to be written to or about a piece of art. Let me also point out that its a far cry better than my original draft which went something like "This painting is of color blue/ He painted it with painty goo."

(In my defense, they MADE me write it.)

life here

BSG, the new miniseries got the BSG catchphrase/premise wrong. Or interpreted it backwards, rather.

At the end of the miniseries (aka, season1, volume1), when announcing that the fleet of survivors would be heading for a legendary Earth, Adama tells the Galactica "Life here began out there." No, stupid. Life here began out there. Life on earth began out in the Colonies of Kobol, not the other way around.

Fail!

Here's something awesome, though. When the Cylons destroy the sub-Light Speed ships that the fleet was forced to leave behind while fleeing, it's to gamelan music.

Thats right folks, the human race is decimated to the sound of gamelan!

Awesomes.

I *heart* Boomer

Dear Boomer,
Please love me back. I don't care if you're a cylon.
Love, Baskerville.

I knew from discussions on several sites that a female charachter, after being revealed as a cylon, is gang raped. I had to go google it because I don't know if I could stand to watch anymore if something really bad happened to Boomer, especially Galactica!Boomer. Turns out it's a Six copy involved in that (And who cares about Six? Any of them? So far they're all obnoxious.) but I still fear the president might airlock-jettison Boomer, because Baltar knows she's a cylon now, and Baltar plays for team Baltar, and no one else.)

Also, the BSG world is supposed to be gender neutral. Apparently this is acchieved by everyone being addressed as 'sir', while continuing to have comments about how to treat a lady, understanding women, etc. Also, one miniseries and eight episodes in, and I have seen both Boomer and Starbuck cry--scrunchy crying face and everything, even if its only for a couple seconds or so--while the men have so far only displayed a dignified sort of damp-eyed look.

FAIL!

PS. Maybe render another shot of Cylon-occupied Caprica, hmm, production team? Shift the clouds abit? Your repeating still frame is stale, yo.

Wassup, neighbors?

It's eleven PM, and downstairs somewhere someone is doing something with what sounds like a mini jackhammer. Y'know; it's got that D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D rapid thumping sound, but were it an actual jackhammer, I'm sure it would be much louder.

And I know that that leads easily into sex/masturbation jokes. Please try to restrain yourselves.

In other news, I went grocery shopping today, so I now have stuff that isn't cold cereal or carrots. Go me.

race and the internet storyteller

If any of you hang around metafandom, hub of things fannish and thinky, at all you might have run into any of sereval race arguments. They're sort of dispersed across LJ in a web of reactions and responses and back-linking so I'm not even going to try to hunt them up and link you, because I'm sure to miss some doubtless important piece of the puzzle. Some highlights, however included:

-Jason Momoa isn't of color, he's Hawaiian.
-Turning people into cats is now a racist slur
-ditto for baristas

And thats just from SGA fandom, which I love, but which is also crazy as a pit of monkeys. (To be fair, there were some good points in the midst of all the plain old kerfuffle, but the good points aren't nearly as much fun to relate.)

So, anyway. I write original fiction, these days (I keep meaning to write FFVII Turks!porn, but I somehow never get around to it) and I've been--supposedly, anyway--editing chapter 3 of my NaNo off and on. I broke it out again last night, and you know what? I don't have any 'Of Color' charachters. At all.

(in this middle bit, I elaborate)

So it might be bad, or just unthoughtful to make AUs where the white charachters are recast as presidents and the 'Of Color' (I so hate this phrase, but the Momoa isn't of color commenter has made me question whether I ever had the definition right at all.) charachters are turned into chimney sweeps. But how about original fiction? Where there was no one to recast anyway? Are we obligated (required?) to have a racially diverse cast whenever possible? Does it have to be explicitly stated that certain charachters are of such-and-such a race? Does it matter if it's amateur fiction (net, LJ), or professional and published (novels)? Can all your charachters be Jewish/Asian/Aborigine/Eskimo/whatever? Is that fair defense for a homogenous seeming cast? Even if the setting allows greater diversity (ie. its not set in the Chinese countryside, or the pre-colonial outback, or something similarly restrictive.)? If yes, what about "all my charachters are white"? Is that equally fair, or totally different? Does it matter where the writer is or is from (because face it. on the web, they could be anywhere)?

HAW HAW, I'm on Tabulas!! (or Notes on an Epic)

LJ has gone and deleted journals that have interests listed that might be construed as illegal, or supporting illegal activity, etc, etc, because an organisation calling themselves "Warriors for Innocence" has been reporting Ljs based on their interest lists.

WiF, uninformed, ignorant fuckhead stupid, as evangelical do-gooders are wont to be, have no idea about fanculture, popculture, subculture, LJ culture, or anything beyond their OMGZCHILRUNZ agenda. And so communites and LJs caught in the sweep include everything from Lolita book discussion groups to afficianados of Lolita, the Japanese originated fashion statement, to fans of the TV drama Supernatural (the Winchester brothers are a popular fan pairing), to Role Play journals (like Dungeons&Dragons, without dice and on LJ), to . . . well, any LJ with pornish words in the interest lists, really.

I was always too lazy to actually implement an interest list, (of which some, while not illegal, might or might not be kinda skeevy) on my LJ, and whether it has anything to do with that or not,

PS. Of, course, like all folks with solid logic and RIGHTEOUSNESS behind them, WiF . . . deleted dissenting and protesting comments, while calling the posters, "pro-pedophile".

As always, journalfen comm fandom_wank has the comprehensive post, in wank report form, as LJ-based fandom goes asplodey.

Wanderlust v2. is a stargate layout.

The idea of the Stargate has always been one I liked: step through and wind up far, far away. It's Star Wars meets CS. Lewis's wardrobe.
